Abstract

Background/Objectives: This study focuses on the increase of materialization of real events from the sports history and tries to draw the sociocultural undertone from the sports movies produced after the 2000s. Methods/Statistical analysis: This study is conducted by discourse analysis of domestically produced sports movies based on true stories after the 2000s. This study is based on mythology, post-modernism and post-colonialism as the theoretical evidence to bring out the mythological discourse of the sports movies as historical description. Findings: Recent sports movies show a narrative strategy for a good box-office performance. They are attracted on the basis of true stories. They focus and foreground the epic tale of the main character and the simple and fierce life of sportsmen as subalterns with their accomplishments. Movies about the most influential sports games emotionally stimulate the collective memory of the audience and firmly take the role of promoting high self-esteem of the nation and feeling of solidarity among public. These factors could increase fun and emotional aspects in ‘factional’ sports movie. Restructured true events in sports movies build up the Korean hybrid narrative with true and sincere genre and dramatic emotional feeling of appellation of anonymous individual as historical agent. Improvements/Applications: Precedent studies about sports movies are still insufficient, while discussions about the media and sports have been increasing. This study tried to draw the subaltern mythology from the sports movies which will contribute to broadening the spectrum of filmic discourse.

Abstract

Objectives: To examine the differences in the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding the media rating criteria. More specifically, this study examined the perceptions of general viewers, parent viewers, film experts, and media rating committee members. Methods/Statistical Analysis: This study used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to identify the relative importance and priorities scales that each group applies to the classification standard. Findings: The results indicated that the general viewers and parent viewers are generally more concerned with the influence of visual media on teenagers while film experts and committee members are more concerned with the expressions of visual media. Such differences of perceptions demonstrated by different stakeholders must be considered when restructuring the media rating system in the future to enhance objectivity and reliability of the criteria. Application/Improvements: The results of this study are believed to be useful for developing appropriate measures regarding the media rating system in the future. *

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Media education is considered essential in terms of fostering abilities to utilize information and to express creatively, which are demanded for individuals to excel in the increasingly media-intensive 21st century. Methods/Statistical Analysis: This study first examines the reasons why media education is necessary and reviews the current media education programs that are conducted in Korea. Then it suggests a model of a media education program for teenagers that can be implemented by the Korea Media Rating Board. Findings: The present study examines the measures to implement an effective media education program. To this end, the suggested model encompasses the essential contents of media education as well as information regarding the Korea Media Rating Board. In other words, the suggested model complies with the founding mission of the Korea Media Rating Board and the objectives of its core projects, but also provides useful lessons regarding the Korea's media rating system and trains teenagers with appropriate media ethics. Meanwhile, this study has limitations due to the need to distinguish the model from existing media education programs conducted in other organizations and the nature of the Korea Media Rating Board. Application/Improvements: The program proposed will contribute to changing the perceptions about the need for media education in public education and to broadening the spectrum of media education in Korea.
